Washington Co. Gets License Plate Recognition System

WASHINGTON, Pa.,None — District Attorney Steven Toprani held a news conference Tuesday to announce Washington County's new license plate recognition system.

The Automatic License Plate Recognition system consists of a camera unit that is mounted on the light bar of marked police cars. Using wireless connectivity, the camera scans visible vehicle license plates, converts the image to text, and then compares the text against a securely maintained wanted vehicle databases.

Once a vehicle is flagged by the system, the vehicle registration is compared against a database of stolen vehicles, vehicles used in felonies, vehicles registered to wanted persons, Meghan's Law offenders and Amber Alerts.

The system will also help assist police in counter-narcotic investigations and patrol functions.

Additionally, wanted vehicles can be checked against historical data to aid in investigations.
