BALDWIN, Pa.,None — Neighbors are being credited with saving a woman from an apartment fire in Baldwin early Thursday morning.
The two-alarm blaze erupted on the ground floor at the Churchview Garden apartment building along Churchview Avenue.
Linda Angel, who is disabled and on oxygen, was sound asleep when the fire started in her living room at about 4 a.m.
"I was sleeping through the smoke detectors, people pounding in the door," said Angel. "Once I opened the door and got hit with the heat and smoke, I was crawling. (I) tried to go to the window."
Ashley Starr lives across the hall from Angel and said she saw smoke pouring out of the apartment. Starr grabbed her kids and ran outside to safety, but concern grew for Angel and her grandson.
"The blinds to the window were moving," said Starr. "I went over, opened the window and another neighbor pulled her out of the window."
"She got the screen out and started yelling, ‘I'm getting you out,'" said Angel. "I thank them a lot. I knew I wouldn't have gotten out. I was in a state of exhaustion. If it wasn't for them, I'd be dead."
"We are a tight-knit community and look out for each other," said Starr.
Angel's grandson wasn't home at the time of the fire, she said.
No injuries were reported.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.
