SWITZERLAND — It's taken 20 years to build, but Switzerland has finally completed work on the world's longest tunnel. The 35-mile 'neat' Gotthard Base Tunnel is nestled 8000 feet beneath the French Alps, nearly a mile and half longer than the previous record holder, Japan's Seikan Tunnel.

Safety tests on the tunnel will begin in October. The first passenger and freight trains are expected to begin running next year. The new tunnel will save travelers an hour of travel time.
