PITTSBURGH — A young Pitt football fan who was battling cancer has died, just a few weeks after meeting his hero.
Five-year-old Andrew O'Neil of North Huntingdon died Monday night of stomach cancer, according to a post on the Andrew's Avengers Facebook page.
Andrew went to a University of Pittsburgh football game last month and met running back and cancer survivor James Conner. His visit also included sideline access and hangout time in the locker room.
Conner posted about Andrew's death on his Twitter page.
While Andrew asked Conner questions about football, it was his performance off the field that touched the boy’s heart.
“I like that he had chemo like me,” Andrew said.
