Boxing on the Bridge event pits U.S. versus Cuba

PITTSBURGH — It’s now waiting list-only for anyone who wanted to attend the Duelo del Siglo (Boxing on the Bridge) event on Saturday, July 30, on the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

All the free tickets were claimed within 11 minutes after they were made available online.

The Pittsburgh versus Cuba boxing event will pit amateur boxing teams against each other in the middle of the bridge.

The event is billed as a celebration of friendship made between western Pennsylvania and Cuba over the past 30 years, and follows a visit by a delegation of business and community leaders to Cuba last fall.

Organizers say due to the interest in the event, Federal Street will be closed in front of Atria’s and available for overflow crowds.

Large screens will be put up to show to youth tournament matches that are being held on the bridge.

Among the expected participants: Robert Brown of the Pittsburgh Boxing Club, former world champion Steve Cunningham of the U.S.S. Fight Academy, team captain Wade Limpscomb, Hall of Fame boxer and former world champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini.

The boxing event will air on PCNC at 7:30 p.m. and be streamed live online at wpxi.com.
