A baseball card featuring Pirates Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner recently sold for a record-breaking $6.6 million.
The 1909 baseball card shattered records Sunday, becoming the most valuable sports card of all time. The most expensive card sold before the Wagner was a $5.2 million Mickey Mantle card.
Bidding began at $1 million on July 23.
“This is an incredible result that speaks to this card’s status as one of the world’s most iconic collectibles. The rarity and the legend of the T206 Honus Wagner, coupled with the quality of this example, excited bidders who recognized it may be a very long time before an opportunity like this came around again,” said Robert Edward Auctions President Brian Dwyer. “The T206 Honus Wagner is the most iconic sports card of all time. Collectors relished a rare opportunity to own a Wagner card that was graded this high. It was an honor to auction this Holy Grail, which is now the most valuable sports card of all time.”
The 1909 Honus Wagner T206 tobacco baseball card is considered the most recognizable and coveted sports trading card of all time. Fewer than sixty are known to exist.
