The Pirates nearly tied their biggest comeback in team history Friday night, but fell short, losing to the Cardinals, 11-10.
The Cardinals jumped to an 11-3 lead over the Pirates, led by a Matt Carpenter home run in the second inning.
They had the bases loaded in the 9th inning, and had cut the Cardinals lead to 11-9 when David Freese flied out to deep center field. That play ended up as a sacrifice fly, but that's all the offense the Pirates could muster in falling to St. Louis.
The Pirates have lost six in a row, and continue to slip back in the National League Central division race.
Max Moroff hit a home run into the river on the bounce as part of the Pirates failed comeback, and a fan jumped into the river after the baseball, creating a memorable moment on the telecast.
The two teams battle again at PNC Park at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, before heading to Williamsport for Sunday’s Major League Baseball Little League Classic.
