LATROBE, Pa. — Saturday was the biggest night of Steelers training camp.
Fireworks lit up the sky over Latrobe Memorial Stadium after more than 8,000 fans packed in for the annual night practice.
Steeler Nation was out in full force. Some fans spent more than 13 hours at the field, getting in line at 9 a.m. with hopes of getting a front row seat.
“I wouldn’t go if I’m in the back,” said Michelle Quaglia of Reading. “Let’s just say that you have to be in the front to get the whole experience — get to meet the players, get the autographs, the whole shebang while you’re here.”
Steelers fans of all ages waited to see the Steelers practice under the lights. One fan traveled from Idaho for the chance to meet their favorite player.
“Coming here to see TJ Watt,” said Maizley.
“We think we’re gonna be pretty good this year, so it depends on who’s healthy and how much the rookies can pick up quick,” said Roy Mohler of Buena Vista, Va.
Gates opened around 3 p.m., and the players arrived on the bus around 6 p.m. They signed autographs and took pictures before taking the field.
This is an annual tradition for many Steelers fans, and it’s typically held on Friday night. But this year it’s on a new day with a new head coach.
“Love it. I think it’s great for the offense,” Mohler said.

“I’m happy with it,” Quaglia said. “... I think it was time for Tomlin to go. I think we needed a fresh start, and Rogers came back to play for McCarthy, so let’s get this good year going.”
The Steelers ended practice with fireworks, and all proceeds from the practice will go to the Greater Latrobe School District.
