PITTSBURGH — It was almost a year to the day since fans walked through the gates at PPG Paints Arena. While things are certainly vastly different than a year ago, things are slowly getting back to normal as the team welcomed back 2,800 fans.
“I’m excited to be back,” said Jordan Webster.
“Its nice to be back and do something we like: watch the Pens together,” said Jake Delic.
While there was nothing but smiles and high-fives inside the arena, the impact of the pandemic was felt up and down Fifth Avenue nearby. Sports bars were still locked up with empty tabletops and signs turned dark. Pizza Milano has been able to weather the storm, however.
“I think they’re taking it safe. We’re obviously going to be socially distanced,” said Josh Cohen. “As long as that follows along, we’ll be fine.”
“It’s really good to see people coming back in,” said Dominick Mack with the restaurant. “I didn’t even know fans were allowed at games today. I came into work and it was like bam!”
In about a month, fans will be allowed inside PNC Park for the Pirates’ opening day matchup.
