TOKYO — Tokyo organizers held a test event for skateboarding Friday as the sport is set to make its Olympic debut this summer.

The event, held at an urban sports park, was conducted without spectators as organizers take countermeasures against COVID-19. Other measures included mandatory mask-wearing, social distancing and frequent hand-sanitizing.

Skateboarders said the lack of cheering was noticeable, with one saying it was “a little sad” without spectators.

In skateboarding, the “street” competition is scheduled for July 25-26, and the “park” event is slated for Aug. 4-5.

The Tokyo Olympics, delayed by a year because of the pandemic, are scheduled to open July 23.

While 19 Japanese skateboarders took part in the test, no international athletes participated.
