PITTSBURGH — Defense wins championships. So does heart. Serra Catholic had both on Friday when they defeated defending champion Beaver Falls for the 2-A WPIAL Football Championship at Heinz Field.
The Eagles forced nine turnovers and scored three touchdowns on defense, to rout beaver Falls 35-12.
It’s the first WPIAL title for Serra Catholic since 1998.
Any championship is great to celebrate, but this one meant a little bit more to the team. They were able to celebrate the win with coach Jose Regus. Regus has been in a wheelchair for several months after he was diagnosed with a neurological disorder.
Regus was determined to walk with his team, and with the help of a walker, he stepped out onto the field with his team after the game was over, to celebrate the big win.
Serra moves on in the PIAA Playoffs next weekend.
