PITTSBURGH — You’ll need the winter coats, hats, gloves and an umbrella as you head out Wednesday, as a late season shot of winter makes a return. Near record cold will keep high temperatures in the 30s, and wind chills in the 20s through a good part of the day.

Rain will mix with snow during the morning commute, but warm ground temperatures and the late April sun angle will keep most paved surfaces wet. A slushy accumulation is possible on grassy areas and north of I-80.

Cold air will really grip the area late Wednesday night and early Thursday with temperatures in the upper 20s by Thursday morning. A Freeze Watch will be in effect, so if you have done any planting, you’ll need to do some covering to save tender plants.
