Severe storms caused flooding, power outages, downed trees and other damage across the greater Pittsburgh area Sunday evening.
Flooding was reported on Interstate 279 North, Washington Boulevard, Baum Boulevard, Second Avenue, Bates Street, the Boulevard of the Allies, Acorn Street in Greenfield, Streets Run Road, Allegheny River Boulevard in Highland Park, and numerous other roadways.
The Squirrel Hill Tunnels were closed for a short time around 9 p.m. due to water coming down the hillside. State police said there was no major flooding, but the water was impeding traffic.
In Connellsville, Fayette County,
[ the mayor declared a state of emergency ]
at approximately 10:30 p.m.
A report of a partial building collapse in West Mifflin at approximately 8:15 p.m. was also storm-related, according to police. West Mifflin police said enough of the building came down to take down wires, a pole and a transformer.
In Bethel Park, a man said he, his wife and his 1-year-old son were inside their home when a massive tree fell onto the house. No one was injured.
At one point Sunday, West Penn Power reported about 5,800 customers without power and Duquesne Light reported nearly 3,200 outages.
