Coronavirus: Who’s eligible for tax breaks while working from home, and who is not?

PITTSBURGH — So many people have been working from home for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With tax season just months away, consumer advisor Clark Howard broke down who is eligible for tax breaks -- and who is not.

Unfortunately, most people who receive W-2 forms from their employers won’t be able to deduct home office expenses, Howard said.

“Your real advantage is you’re not having to commute you’re getting to work in your home. But if you are employed by somebody getting a W-2 from them, you’re not going to be able to deduct home office expenses, equipment -- (if) you buy anything like that. So, it doesn’t apply to you,” said Howard.

Howard said anyone who works as an independent contractor can deduct pretty much all legitimate expenses involved with doing that work from home instead of people’s offices.
