Group wants to host Straight Pride parade in Boston

BOSTON, Mass. — A group is working with the City of Boston to host a 'Straight Pride' parade this summer.

Super Happy Fun America, the group behind the proposal, bills itself as an advocate for “the straight community in order to build respect, inclusivity, equality, diversity, unity, solidarity, dignity, social mobility, empowerment, sustainability, justice, awareness, intersectionality, human rights, education, access, participation, dialogue, visibility, tolerance, and alliances with people from all walks of life.”

John Hugo, president of Super Happy Fun America, said straight people are an oppressed majority.

“We will fight for the right of straights everywhere to express pride in themselves without fear of judgement and hate,” Hugo said in a statement. “The day will come when straights will finally be included as equals among all of the other orientations.”

Super Happy Fun America’s announcement about plans for a Straight Pride parade come as Boston is in the middle of the annual LGBTQ Pride Week.

Pride Week is organized by Boston Pride, a nonprofit organization that “produces events and activities to achieve inclusivity, equality, respect, and awareness in Greater Boston and beyond.”

When asked about the Straight Pride parade proposal, Boston Pride President Linda DeMarco sent WFXT this statement:

“Boston Pride welcomes everyone to march in the Pride Parade this Saturday, June 8th. We know that straight allies of the LGBTQ community are among the thousands of supporters who come out every year to march, observe and celebrate. We are looking forward to seeing our straight friends, family, and neighbors at the Boston Pride parade and festival this Saturday along with members of the LGBTQ community. In the meantime, we are focused on putting on our largest Boston Pride parade ever.”

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh echoed DeMarco’s call for people to join this weekend’s parade.

“Every year Boston hosts our annual Pride Week, where our city comes together to celebrate the diversity, strength and acceptance of our LGBTQ community,” Walsh said in a statement. “This is a special week that represents Boston's values of love and inclusion, which are unwavering. I encourage everyone to join us in celebration this Saturday for the Pride Parade and in the fight for progress and equality for all."

The City of Boston is in contact with Super Happy Fun America, but hasn’t issued any permits yet.

At one point on Tuesday, #StraightPrideParade was trending on Twitter.
