Former Alcoa CEO Paul O’Neill dies at 84

PITTSBURGH — Paul O’Neill, the former chairman and CEO of Alcoa Inc. and one-time U.S. Treasury secretary, has died at the age of 84.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news on Saturday that O’Neill, who was being treated for lung cancer, had died at his home in Pittsburgh.

O’Neill had come to Pittsburgh in 1987 for the top post at Alcoa (NYSE:AA), after having served as president of International Paper Co. His career, before and after Alcoa, embraced both corporate and government positions.

He led the aluminum giant for 12 years, almost tripling its workforce and moving headquarters from downtown Pittsburgh to the city’s North Side neighborhood.
