Arrest made after local ice cream shop vandalized

NEW STANTON, Pa. — Police have made an arrest after a local ice cream shop was vandalized over the weekend.

The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that Gerald Younkin, 53, of Greensburg, was taken into custody.

Younkin is accused of breaking into Bruster’s Real Ice Cream in New Stanton and taking an envelope with $23, plus several ice cream products.

Investigators estimate the damage to be around $1,500. The shop has been closed since Sunday morning.

The DA’s office says state police were initially sent to the Bruster’s for a motion detection alarm. Troopers arrived to find broken glass and a metal grate on the ground under a window.

Younkin allegedly shut off the store’s power before leaving.

The owners of the ice cream shop and neighboring Poulich Piut BBW posted surveillance video and photos on social media to try and identify the suspect.

“We have to have restoration come in, clean everything up,” owner Angelo Poulich told Channel 11 on Monday. “And the product is all destroyed.”

Younkin is charged with burglary, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and theft by unlawful taking.

He’s being held in the Westmoreland County Jail. Bail is set at $10,000.
