PENN HILLS, Pa. — A driver accused of hitting two teenage girls with his car following a robbery is in custody after a manhunt.
The incident started when first responders were called to Doyle Street in Wilkinsburg and Sampson Street in Penn Hills just after 4:30 p.m.
According to police, it all started with a robbery there.
The driver then took off in a black Cadillac sedan and headed toward Wilkinsburg.
On Doyle Street, the Cadillac struck two teen girls who were walking on a sidewalk. According to police paperwork, police said George Kevin Mitchell “intentionally drove into the girls,’ driving 45 miles per hour and not stopping.
Neighbors tell us one was upright but shaken up. The other was on the ground. Her face was covered in blood, and she appeared to have a leg injury.
Both girls were rushed to a hospital.
“Coward. You wouldn’t want that to happen to your family. At least you can stop and see if anyone is living or dead,” Maxine Stone said. She’s lived on Doyle for 45 years.
On Sampson, neighbors tell us a man was hit. They say paramedics arrived on scene and took him to a hospital.
“You deserve to go to jail. You [could’ve] taken an innocent life out of this world from his family and loved ones and his neighbors who love him, too,” a neighbor told us. “You have done the crime. Now, it’s time for you to do the time.”
According to the criminal complaint, there was a series of crimes leading up to Mitchell hitting the two girls, including attempted carjacking and reportedly hitting a dog with his car.
Around 8 p.m., police told us the Cadillac was found in the 700 block of Penny Drive. It has significant damage to the windshield. There was no driver to be found.
Allegheny County Police are investigating a deadly stabbing on that same street. Jinx Hairston was dropped off at a hospital by someone after she was stabbed last night on Penny Drive, where she was pronounced dead. A suspect has not yet been named in that case.
Police next issued a “be on the lookout” alert for a 2020 Silver Nissan SUV. They identified the driver as Mitchell.
At 10:40 p.m., police said that Mitchell showed up at a hospital and was arrested, but Friday morning, Wilkinsburg police told Channel 11 that he was not in custody.
A manhunt resumed Friday morning, and Wilkinsburg police said he was arrested in Penn Hills on Frankstown Avenue around 5:15 a.m. after an hours-long search involving drones and K9s. He was taken to a hospital for injuries.
Mitchell is charged with two counts of criminal attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault by vehicle.
Penn Hills Police tell Channel 11 that they believe Mitchell may be connected to a deadly stabbing on Penny Drive in Penn Hills that occurred Thursday night. No charges have been filed in relation to this case yet. We’re working to find out more information.
