Measles confirmed in local school

Measles has been confirmed in a local school.

Eden Christian Academy said Friday that it’s working with the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) to stop the disease’s spread after being notified of measles in its community.

Two measles cases were confirmed in Allegheny County this week, on Monday and Thursday. ACHD says both people attend the same school but live in different households.

Eden Christian Academy would not share details about any patients, but said it is addressing the issue across its three campuses.

Actions include communicating with families and staff who may have been exposed, deep cleaning across all facilities and advising unvaccinated or non-immune staff and students about “exclusion periods,” according to public health guidelines.

The school adds that its health records and policies are compliant with the state’s student vaccination requirements.

Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak, which has surpassed 1,000 cases this year, is the largest state outbreak in more than three decades, the Associated Press reports.
