ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — A second case of measles has been reported in Allegheny County.

According to the Allegheny County Health Department website, that case was reported as of Thursday.

The first case of measles was reported on Monday.

Health officials said the person who contracted measles was under 18 years old and unvaccinated.

Officials said anyone who visited the Target at 9805 McKnight Road in the Pine Creek Shopping Plaza on Thursday, Oct. 1, between the hours of 3:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. could have been exposed to that first person.

Channel 11 has reached out to county officials to learn more about the second case and whether or not anyone has been exposed elsewhere. We are waiting to hear back.

Health officials are urging anyone who has not already been vaccinated for measles to consider doing so. Allegheny County has an Immunization Clinic that can help provide those vaccines. Click here to learn more about the clinic.

The virus is considered highly contagious and can spread when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. It can also remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, even after an infected person leaves the area.

Symptoms for measles include a high fever (>101 degrees F), a cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash that usually starts on the face. Those can pop up seven to 21 days after someone is exposed to measles.
