WEST HOMESTEAD, Pa. — A woman was honored for helping save her 4-year-old niece who was hit by a box truck in West Homestead.
The crash happened the afternoon of June 3, at the intersection of West Eighth Avenue and Neel Street.
According to the Allegheny County Police Department, the girl lost control of her bike and hit a parked car before being struck by the box truck. The truck’s driver stayed on scene and was cooperative with police.
In a social media post Wednesday, the West Homestead Police Department said the girl suffered critical injuries and was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital.
After much treatment and rehabilitation, the girl was released from the hospital on her birthday, police say. She’s now back at home with her family and preparing to start kindergarten.
During Tuesday night’s borough council meeting, West Homestead officials presented the girl’s aunt, Sharron Watson, with a mayoral proclamation.
“Sharron acted immediately and without regard for her own safety. Her actions played a vital role in helping save this little girl’s life,” the police department’s post reads.
