2 firefighters injured battling 3-alarm structure fire late Friday night

PITTSBURGH — Two firefighters were hurt battling a blaze that grew to three alarms before they could get it under control.

Firefighters were called to the 7900 block of Madiera Street around 11:25 p.m. Friday. Heavy flames could be seen coming from the second floor when they arrived and the fire grew to three alarms.

It took fire crews about an hour to get the fire under control.

Officials said one firefighter was hurt when he fell about 10 feet off a ladder and had a cut to his head. He was conscious and alert while medics treated him at the scene before he could be taken to the hospital. Another firefighter injured his back when he fell through a hole in the floor. Officials said a third firefighter was treated for symptoms of extreme heat exposure at the scene.

The cause is still under investigation.
