HARRISBURG, Pa. — More than 1 million Pennsylvanians have gotten a REAL ID, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials announced Friday.

“I am so proud that we have reached this milestone,” said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. “From the beginning, customer service was at the center of PennDOT’s REAL ID program, and that continues to be our focus as the federal deadline approaches.”

REAL ID is optional. However, starting Oct. 1, 2021, a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a valid U.S. passport/passport card or a military ID will be required to board a commercial flight or enter a federal building.

PennDOT paused REAL ID issuance throughout the state in March because of COVID-19, but has now resumed at reopened Driver License Centers offering driver license services.

PennDOT anticipates that 2.5 million Pennsylvanians will choose to get a REAL ID, with 1.3 million obtaining them by Oct. 1, based on data from other states with optional REAL ID programs.
