PITTSBURGH — With schools across Pennsylvania closed indefinitely, Pittsburgh Public Schools is scrambling to establish at-home learning for 23,000 students, many of whom don’t have full access to technology.

Officials said significant planning is taking place and teachers are undergoing training Tuesday.

Student instruction will start April 16, with an orientation for remote learning and distribution of materials happening April 14 and April 15.

The school district is looking to quickly purchase 5,000 new laptops, in addition to using about 600 devices from the University of Pittsburgh, after determining 41 percent of its families don’t have access to devices for each child.

Distribution of technology to identified students, beginning with high school seniors, will start April 9.

Offline learning will be supported as well. The district is preparing printed instructional packets for students who still won’t have Internet access.
