DUQUESNE HEIGHTS, Pa. — A raccoon has tested positive for rabies in an Allegheny County neighborhood, the Allegheny County Health Department said.
The racoon was reported by a person living in Duquesne Heights to an animal rescue organization earlier this month.
The rescue organization was treating the raccoon for mange until it started showing signs of having rabies.
There wasn’t any human exposure to the raccoon.

Rabies is transmitted by an animal bite or scratch and is almost always fatal when left untreated.
The health department reminded people to watch for unusual animal behavior.
This is the first animal to test positive for rabies in 2021.
