The Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup champions after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in five games.
This is the first NHL title for the Capitals in franchise history, and the first for captain Alex Ovechkin who has long been considered a standout player in the league.
This was the first Stanley Cup finals appearance for Vegas, it was also a statement way to cap off their inaugural season.
FIRST PERIOD ANALYSIS:
Neither team scored in the first period of Game 5, something that many viewers said boded well for the Golden Knights, who would be hard pressed to mount a come-from-behind victory and extend the series.
SECOND PERIOD ANALYSIS:
What a period! Both teams are finding the back of the net and the players are starting to get chippy. Vegas fans are going wild in the stands as the home team leads 3-2 at the end of the period. There were quite a few physical altercations to end the period, so we'll see how much of that carries over into the third.

This is the team's FIRST time winning the NHL championship in its history.
To make the night even more special, Alex Ovechkin was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy for playoff MVP and finally given the chance to hoist the cup.
