PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh has a rich history with the Olympics. There are many Pittsburgh natives, or those with ties to our area, who have won an Olympic gold or silver medal.

One of those people is swimmer Leah Smith. The Mount Lebanon native competed in the 2016 games in Rio.

Smith won a bronze medal in the 400 meters and a gold medal in the 4 x 200m relay.

“I’ve been looking up to people who have Olympic medals all of my life,” Smith said. “And now it’s just weird to be one of those people who has one.”

We talked to her just after she returned home in 2016, wearing both her medals proudly around her neck.

Smith came up just short in her bid to return to the 2020 games in Tokyo.
