Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office obtains court order to temporarily close Capo’s

PITTSBURGH — An embattled bar in Pittsburgh’s South Side was forced to close on Monday.

The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office tells Channel 11 that the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office was obtaining a court order to close Capo’s.

The DA’s office later confirmed it filed for a Preliminary Injunction Pending a Rule to Show Cause Hearing on Monday morning. The Order for Temporary Injunction on Consent was issued by the afternoon.

Because of this, Capo’s will remain closed pending a hearing scheduled for Dec. 7.

“These legal steps were taken because of the violation of the prior Consent Agreement and were independent of any outside campaign,” the office’s statement said in part. “While we are always happy to collaborate with local groups, we must conduct an independent investigation gathering the facts and follow the legal process.”

The DA took the action against Capo’s only days after someone was stabbed inside the bar on Friday night. A police officer found the victim outside afterwards and investigators say they’re in critical condition.

“The bar took the victim and threw them out the back door and basically said, ‘Good luck, best of luck to you,’” Charland said to Channel 11 on Saturday.

Charland and several South Side businesses wrote an open letter, asking for the DA to seek a court-ordered closure of the bar after the incident.

The bar remained closed through the weekend.

The stabbing isn’t the first instance of trouble at Capo’s. At the end of August, the DA released a list of 23 demands for the bar to meet in order to stay in operation. Those demands included closing at 1:30 a.m., lowering the capacity to 100 people below the permitted occupancy limit, instituting a uniform small bag policy and stopping the sale of “fishbowls” and other drinks containing excessive amounts of alcohol.

If the bar violated any conditions of the agreement, the DA’s Office previously said it would shut the bar down.

Those demands and the consent agreement came amid calls for the bar to be shut down.

The DA was previously pursuing a nuisance bar petition, actions taken after a woman claimed she was raped after being thrown out of the bar by a bouncer while intoxicated.

The suspect in that assault, Larry Pappy Jonson, was arrested days later in New York. He has yet to be extradited back to Pennsylvania.

A petition filed back in August alleged that since Capo’s opened in May 2024, the East Carson Street bar has been the site of persistent criminal activity and violence. The filing cites 42 police incidents between March 2025 and August 2026, including fights, assaults, intoxicated people needing hospitalization and underage drinking.
