The Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Westmoreland County is one step closer to finding a new airline.
The Westmoreland County Airport Authority (WCAA) announced Friday that it had secured an $850,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Funding comes from the DOT’s Small Community Air Service Development program and provides a financial incentive to help an airline establish service at the airport.
“Now that we have the grant in place, the next step is to start negotiating to bring air service back to Arnold Palmer Regional Airport,” WCAA Executive Director Maurice Haas stated in a release.
Potential airlines haven’t been publicly identified, but destinations would include either Myrtle Beach, S.C., or Florida.

Arnold Palmer has been without a carrier since May 1, when Spirit Airlines abruptly shut down.

The WCAA had previously said it was close to securing a deal with another airline.
