NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Police tape is still visible in the parking lot where a deadly shooting happened at a bar in New Kensington early Saturday.
Investigators say the brother of the man killed is charged with homicide.
According to police, the shooting followed a fight inside the Elks Lodge in New Kensington.
Court paperwork states that 38-year-old Steffon Ballard and another man got into an altercation before the other man was escorted out.
Witnesses told investigators shortly before 3:00 a.m. Saturday, they saw Steffon and his brother Jeffery Ballard, who worked as a bouncer at the lodge, assault the same man in the parking lot.
The victim told police the brothers struck and kicked him while he was on the ground.
Moments later, witnesses said Steffon pulled a gun from his sock and began hitting the man in the head with it.
The criminal complaint says the gun then fired and the shot hit Jeffery in the thigh.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, but later died due to blood loss.
By Tuesday, a handwritten sign reading “closed until further notice” was posted on the lodge door.
No one answered the doorbell or calls to the business.
Police say the man who was reportedly beaten escaped after the gun went off.
He went to a nearby hospital with injuries to his head, face, back and nose.
After interviewing witnesses and reviewing all video of what happened, police issued an arrest warrant for Steffon.
Along with the homicide charge, Steffon faces attempted homicide, aggravated assault and possession of firearm prohibited.
He is not in custody at this time. Anyone with information on his location is asked to call 911 or the New Kensington Police Department.
