PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh music legend Donnie Iris says he’s retiring from performing live.
In a letter posted on Donnie Iris and the Cruisers’ social media page, Iris said “recent health issues” motivated the decision.
Best known for his work with the Jaggerz and their hit song “The Rapper,” Iris played his last show Sept. 28 at Citizens Live and the Wylie’s grand opening.
“It was a meaningful and fitting moment to share with all of you in my hometown,” Iris said. “Thank you all for showing me grace and gratitude at that performance.”
Iris’ health has impacted his ability to perform before.
In June 2023, he canceled a Youngstown concert with REO Speedwagon after being diagnosed with cancer. He returned to the stage in March 2024 following chemotherapy.
Iris was born in Ellwood City on Feb. 28, 1943.
Around 1978, Iris joined the band Wild Cherry, famous for the song “Play That Funky Music.”
