WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — A welfare check led to a much bigger discovery in West Mifflin on Thursday.
Dozens of cats, along with the remains of some cats, were found inside a home on Duquesne Avenue, according to Channel 11's Erin Clarke.
Police said they became aware of the conditions inside the house while checking on the 87-year-old man who lives there.
The man is being treated at a hospital after he was found unresponsive, police said.
"They were literally climbing walls, hiding in ceilings, hiding behind every piece of furniture and in every hole," Seth Mowrey, a humane officer, said about the cats found living in squalor. "There was a decomposing cat underneath the piece of furniture in the kitchen. Looked like it had been there for several months. It was nothing but hair and bones."
A code enforcement officer taped a sign to the door that says the house is uninhabitable because of filth, electrical problems and a falling ceiling.

A neighbor told Channel 11 the man started taking in strays about two years ago.
Humane officers rescued 11 kittens and eight adult cats in need of medical attention. The elderly homeowner will not face charges.
