A two-acre man-made lagoon coming to Pittsburgh will be the first in the world that can partially transform from a body of water into a frozen skating rink in the winter.

The amenity by Crystal Lagoons will be part of Millcraft Investment’s Esplanade development in the North Side along the Ohio River.

“It’s going to be a first-day attraction for people who have never been to the city of Pittsburgh before.” said Chelsea Peluso of Millcraft Investments.

Renderings show people swimming, paddle-boarding and kayaking in the lagoon surrounded by white sand beaches.

Guests can also enjoy thermal baths in colder weather.

"It’s very important to us, as we plan the Esplanade project, to add features that are functional year-round — welcoming to all ages, to all of those within the community, to all of those visiting our city and to the future residents of Esplanade," said Lucas Pratt, president and chief operating officer of Millcraft Investments.

Peluso said as more details are worked out, Millcraft will release a definitive construction schedule.
