2 arrested in connection with death of man found near elementary school

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Pa. — Two people were arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of a man found near a Lawrence County elementary school earlier this month, state police said.

Ryan Christopher Avery, 24, and Melissa Sue Aponte, 33, both of New Castle, are facing charges stemming from the homicide of Frederick Deangelo Swillings, 24, of New Castle.

A grandparent walking their grandchild found Swillings’ body near Mohawk Elementary School on Hoffmaster Road in North Beaver Township on May 1. Authorities said he had been shot several times.

State police said Avery and Aponte were arrested in Birmingham, Alabama, after fleeing the state following the incident.

Avery was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and criminal conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Aponte was charged with kidnapping, criminal conspiracy to commit homicide, criminal conspiracy to commit robbery and criminal conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.

Authorities said both will be arraigned at a later date pending extradition back to Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile, state police said the investigation is continuing with criminal charges pending against additional suspects.
