PITTSBURGH — Police have identified two people as suspects in a gift card fraud scheme targeting Dick’s Sporting Goods stores across Western Pennsylvania.
Investigators say that Kayla Munzo and Derek Bussell used 23 gift cards to steal more than $11,000 worth of merchandise over more than 22 days.
The scheme targeted multiple store locations including Ross Park Mall, Monroeville Mall, Westmoreland Mall and The Waterworks. Investigators noted that the local thefts were part of a broader nationwide scheme that has cost the retailer nearly $180,000.
According to police, the operation relied on precise timing between two individuals. One person obtained the gift card information while the second person brought the physical card to a store cashier to activate it. Before the second person paid at the register, the first individual used the newly activated gift card details to complete purchases online.
After the online purchases were completed, the pair’s credit card declined at the store checkout counter. Police were able to track down Munzo and Bussell by reviewing surveillance video footage and analyzing credit card information left behind during the transactions.
