31-year-old father of 5 killed in Wilkinsburg shooting

PITTSBURGH — The medical examiner’s office has identified a man shot and killed in Wilkinsburg Tuesday.

Officials said 31-year-old Anthony Garland, of Wilkinsburg, was killed in his apartment building on Kelly Avenue around 5 p.m.

Channel 11’s Dave Bondy reported that Garland was a father of five.

Garland’s best friend Karlin Stanton said he wants everyone to know that Garland was a good, family oriented man who stayed away from trouble.

“He just told me, ‘Everything I do is about my kids.’ He said, ‘I got five kids and they depend on me. If they need something, I can’t say no,’” Stanton said.

Allegheny County police said they are speaking to residents of the Kelly Avenue building to see if they can find any leads. It’s also unclear if nearby surveillance cameras were able to help detectives in their investigation.

Stanton said whoever is responsible for his friend’s slaying probably knew him because all visitors have to be buzzed inside.

“It’s just senseless. This really is a senseless crime,” said Stanton. “He didn’t have any enemies. If you look at his Facebook page or speak to anybody, he doesn’t have any enemies. He was a good guy.”

So far, police have not said if they have identified any suspects or made any arrests.
