PITTSBURGH — Peoples Natural Gas will begin a 3,000-foot pipeline replacement project in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood Sunday.
Work will focus on replacing existing gas lines near the intersection of Forward and Murray avenues.
The modernization effort is part of the company’s Long-Term Infrastructure Improvement Plan, an ongoing initiative to upgrade more than 4,000 miles of gas lines.
The project will retire 19th-century pipelines along Forward Avenue, Murray Avenue and Pocusset Street.
The project will begin on Murray Avenue with the installation of about 500 feet of mainline. This segment starts south of the intersection with Forward Avenue and extends north through the intersection.
Crews will work overnight shifts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., running Sunday nights through Friday mornings, with potential additional work from Friday nights into Saturdays.
Once the new pipeline on Murray Avenue is in place, construction will shift to a 2,500-foot segment along Forward Avenue. This work is tentatively scheduled for daytime hours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Forward Avenue pipeline will stretch from near the eastbound ramp to Interstate 376, through the Murray Avenue intersection, to the intersection of Forward and Shady avenues.
Traffic control measures will be active on streets while work is ongoing. Following the completion of pipeline installation, Peoples Natural Gas will begin street, sidewalk and landscape restoration in affected areas.
