MONESSEN, Pa. — The Monessen City School District says routine maintenance discovered issues that may delay the opening of its schools for the upcoming school year.
In a letter sent to families of the district, Superintendent Dr. Robert Motte says the facility team noticed an abnormality in the wall near the gymnasium concession stand on July 28.
More abnormalities were found upon further investigation. The affected areas were secured and sealed.
Motte says similar abnormalities were found behind walls in several restroom areas. Those spots were also secured and sealed.
The district contacted an environmental restoration and assessment company for an inspection, which was done on Aug. 3. The results of that inspection were not specified.
On Saturday, Motte says specialists started conducting air quality tests throughout the Middle/High School. Those tests will take place through Tuesday.
Once the results are received and reviewed, Motte says the district will determine whether the building can open for students and staff as scheduled, or if a delayed start may be necessary for remediation.
