ALCOSAN holds welcomes public to open house event

PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority welcomed the community to its 24th annual open house.

The event gave people a chance to see the work ALCOSAN does to keep clean water flowing throughout the county. That includes an expansion being done at their plant along the Ohio River, which includes a new laboratory.

“We’re really growing towards bigger and better things here. We’re increasing the capacity of water that we can actually process and treat in the plant,” ALCOSAN Public Information Officer Amanda Mueller said.

Visitors got to participate in hands-on activities, see a newly installed 2,000-gallon river-water fish tank and meet mascot Frankie the Fish.

Along with the open house, the authority is celebrating its 80th year in existence.

“For 80 years, ALCOSAN has been part of the fabric of our region, with a shared commitment to protecting our waterways,” Arletta Scott Williams, ALCOSAN’s executive director, said.
