PITTSBURGH — Members of the Allegheny County Council have introduced legislation that would mandate a disclaimer on AI-created political campaign content.
Councilmembers Dan Grzybek and Alex Rose are calling for a “conspicuous disclaimer stating the image or video is AI-generated” on any election content made by AI.
The bill was formally introduced at Tuesday’s meeting.
“Even a casual glance at the news will show dozens of stories from around the country of politicians running commercials with AI-generated content designed to deceive voters. The technology makes it possible, and without legal regulation, there will be bad actors who avail themselves of the opportunity. As we approach important county elections next year, such as County Executive, County Council, and District Attorney, I want to ensure that voters know when they are seeing a real picture or an AI-generated one,” Rose said.
“Government has to adapt with the times. AI technology has introduced many new challenges to important systems, such as our elections. We must respond to ensure those systems are protected. As artificially generated images, audio, and even video look increasingly more like the real thing, it is critical that AI content is clearly called out so that voters can make fully informed decisions at the ballot box.”
