Annual 5K raises funds for critical brain cancer research

McCANDLESS, Pa. — The annual Head for the Cure 5K was held Saturday morning on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Runners and walkers came together at North Park to honor those affected by brain cancer and to raise funds for research locally and nationally.

Channel 11 spoke with the woman who first started the event. She told us just how important it is to bring the community together.

“You have someone to vent with, someone to talk with, who is going through it or who has gone through it and is here to support,” Jackie Pollack said.

The event is now organized by nonprofit Head for the Cure, which has raised more than $35 million for brain cancer research since 2003.

Per the nonprofit’s website, the Pittsburgh 5K surpassed its $75,000 fundraising goal. Teams participating in the 5K brought in over $78,000 for brain cancer research.
