A 4-pound cat named Butterscotch is under the care of White Oak Animal Safe Haven after being found tied to a pole with only a small pile of food.
The cat had no way to escape the sun, access water or reach safety before being rescued.
White Oak Animal Safe Haven, an animal rescue organization, accepted Butterscotch into its facility despite already being at full operational capacity.
“We are already at capacity, but when this girl needed somewhere to go, we simply could not say no,” White Oak Animal Safe Haven said.
During her initial intake examination, staff discovered a severe flea infestation on the cat, with at least 100 fleas falling off her during the vetting process.
“We cannot even imagine the level of discomfort she was experiencing,” White Oak Animal Safe Haven said. “This is cruel. There is no excuse for it.”
Butterscotch has since been given shelter, food and medical treatment.
“She is safe. She is warm. She has a clean, soft bed to lay in. She is receiving treatment for her horrific flea infestation,” the organization said. “Butterscotch deserves so much better than what happened to her. We will do everything we can to make sure she gets it from here on out.”
