PITTSBURGH — The Cathedral of Learning is turning 100 years old.
Workers broke ground for the historic building on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus on September 27, 1926.
The Cathedral is on Pitt’s campus, but it’s really a building for the people. The funds to build the landmark came from corporate and private donations, including a fundraiser for kids to donate 10 cents. Immigrant groups also funded the very popular Nationality Rooms.
The Cathedral of Learning is the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere and serves as classrooms, study spaces, university departments and a home to Peregrine Falcons, Carla and Ecco.
