Community members come together to demand justice, honor Peter Spencer

PITTSBURGH — Community members gathered in Highland Park on Sunday night to push for justice and honor the life of Peter Spencer, the 29-year-old man who went camping with a group of white friends in December, but didn’t return home.

“I just want to know what happened,” said Carmela King, Spencer’s fiancé.

King says she has so many unanswered questions.

“I want to know why nobody’s been arrested, not one person,” King, said.

On December 12, Spencer was found dead, shot nine times at a campsite in Rockland Township. Loved ones said Spencer had gone on a camping trip with a group of white friends that he’d worked with at a previous job.

“It makes it seem as though that these killers are out in faraway Venango County,” said vigil organizer Amon Hasha.

Event organizers upset by the handling of the investigation said they want to see it turned over to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and see those responsible prosecuted.

“They deserve justice, and we are going to make sure we can support them in their fight for that,” said Hasha.

Sunday’s vigil was about pushing for answers and a continued investigation, but it was also about celebrating Spencer’s 29-years of life.

“He was really someone who was like a servant of the people, every spare moment he tried to uplift,” said Hasha.

Spencer was a soon-to-be-father and soon-to-be-husband, and his family shared they would like him to be remembered as a kind man who loved nature and family.

“He was a good man, always smiling, always loving, always happy,” said, King.

There have been no arrests or charges filed in almost two months since Spencer’s death. On Feb. 21, community members plan to march through downtown Pittsburgh demanding justice for Peter Spencer.
