DONORA, Pa. — A Facebook post from the Borough of Donora has some people up in arms. It lists the names, addresses, and account numbers of hundreds of residents and businesses that borough officials said are behind on paying their refuse and sanitation bills.
While some people are outraged and believe this is intended to humiliate residents, others said it needed to be done to make the Borough whole.
“There’s always another way to get money. They just do it the wrong way,” said Bobbie Odenthal of Donora.
Council president Casey Perrotta called the Facebook post a last resort after Donora sent letters to those with outstanding balances and had no luck.
“We are out over a quarter of a million dollars,” Perrotta said. “The good taxpayers of Donora and the good people of Donora should not have to make up for the bad people of Donora.”
Perrotta said the Borough put out a similar post last month and collected $8,000 in two weeks.
“My name was on the list of unpaid trash bills, but my bill was paid,” said Robert Chaney, who Channel 11 met outside of the Borough building.
Chaney said he’s not happy and hoped to resolve the discrepancy immediately.
“There’s something going on with their system, definitely, maybe they’ll find out and get it straight,” Chaney said.
Some residents think it’s a blatant violation of privacy and puts people at risk.
“They’re just throwing people’s names out in the air and seeing if they can come up with some sort of payment,” said Ron Zaladonis of Donora.
“Putting people’s personal information out there to go out and pretty much destroy them, I think that’s very unprofessional,” said Otha Curley, a local business owner.
Others believe that something had to be done.
“Look at Donora — what would $260,000 do for our town? You know, all these buildings, they could tear down some of these abandoned houses, and you know, to make our town better. Make Donora great again,” said Monte Costa.
Perotta said account numbers are only tied to property addresses, not any form of payment or financial information.
