CORE names new president and CEO Deborah Maurer, CORE. (CORE)

The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) named a new leader who is coming to the nonprofit organization from UPMC’s transplant program.

Deborah Maurer joined CORE in July from UPMC, where she was transplant administrator at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute. She began as president and CEO in August, succeeding Susan Stuart, who had been president and CEO of CORE for two decades.

CORE is the organization that coordinates donations of organ, tissue and corneas and works with 150 hospitals, transplant centers, medical examiners, funeral homes and coroners in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and one county in New York. It had 1,191 organs transplanted in 2025 from 484 donors.
