PITTSBURGH — Cyclists participated in Martha’s Ride, an annual charity event honoring a Pittsburgh-born FBI agent killed in the line of duty.
The ride features 10-mile and 30-mile routes that serve as the final leg of a 300-mile endurance journey from Washington, D.C., to Pittsburgh.
The annual event raises money for the Martha Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to building local playgrounds. The ride honors Martha Dixon, who was shot and killed inside a Washington, D.C., police station in 1994. The FBI field office building in Pittsburgh is named in her honor.
The Martha Fund directs its fundraising efforts toward constructing community playgrounds for children. For its 2024 project, the organization selected a location at the City Mission women’s shelter in Washington, Pa.
Kevin Dixon, an organizer with the Martha Fund, detailed the upcoming shelter project.
“We’re doing one in Washington, PA this year,” Dixon said. “A place called City Mission, it’s a women’s shelter. We’re going to help them build their playground this year. The Martha Fund has put smiles on the faces of thousands of kids, we like to say.”
