East Allegheny students return to class after strike

PITTSBURGH — East Allegheny teachers and students returned to class Wednesday after a 16-day long strike.

Teachers in the district still do not have a contract, and haven’t for the last three years. Under law, the teachers were forced to return to the classrooms on Sept. 24.

The teachers’ union continues to seek a pay increase and better health benefits.

“It’s definitely a relief this morning on my part,” said parent Ben Seiler.

Seiler said one of his sons is a senior, and it’s not clear when graduation will be.

“It bothers him, but again he knows what’s going on with the teachers and what they’re doing,” Seiler said.

“I would just like for them to come to some kind of agreement, because the only one’s losing out are the kids,” said parent Nancy Jenkins.
Officials said the next step for the teachers and the school board is going to non-binding arbitration, which officials said could be a lengthy process.
“We all want to do the job we’re supposed to be doing; helping out the students and giving them the support and education they deserve,” said EA Education Association President Cheryl Ihnat.
At this time, Channel 11 News has learned that there are no plans for the union and school board to meet.
