Temperatures are starting to cool, and the leaves are about to change colors, so Peoples Natural Gas says it’s time to prepare homes for fall and winter.
The gas company says making homes more resilient to cold temperatures can have a major impact on costs during the colder months.
There are several tasks homeowners can take to create a safer, more energy-efficient environment. The steps can be as simple as scheduling heating appliance inspections or strategically opening and closing curtains throughout the day.
Peoples Natural Gas offers the following suggestions:
- Replace your furnace filter regularly, following manufacturer recommendations
- Avoid using or storing flammable products near any gas or heat-producing appliances
- Ensure indoor and outdoor vents are clear from obstructions including lint, dust, snow, and ice
- Inspect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replacing as needed
- Add insulation around water pipes, especially those located along outside walls
- If you think you smell gas, immediately leave the area then call Peoples at 1-800-400-4271
