PITTSBURGH — Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry Secretary Nancy A. Walker visited the Industrial Arts Workshop in Hazelwood on Thursday to mark the launch of a new registered welding pre-apprenticeship program.
The program will train at least 15 high school students each year for high-demand careers in the skilled trades.
The initiative was made possible through a $250,000 Schools-to-Work grant awarded by the Department of Labor & Industry earlier this year.
Funding supports efforts to prepare local students for family-sustaining jobs in technical fields.
Students participating in the shop gain exposure to hands-on training that can lead directly to future employment or higher education.
Apprentice Kamya Robinson emphasized the broad range of opportunities the workshop provides to participants.
“I think that everyone should have experience within this shop because it really opens your horizons to what could possibly be out there, like college or even going straight into the workforce,” Robinson said.
